The Story of my life

about US

We will maintain this site till Devyani decides to manage it on her own.

We will try to share our milestones in parenting; good ones, bad ones  and hope it helps you too.

Toddlers Library

We have read many books to her; most commonly demanded ones are (in no particular order)

  1. The Jungle book (Disney)
  2. 3 in one Moral Stories (my kids world)
  3. My little book of safety (Tumbi)
  4. Tinker bell and the friendship garden (Disney)
  5. Stories for 2 year olds(igloo)
  6. Stories for 3 year olds (igloo)
  7. Tangled (Disney)
  8. The Tiger who came to Tea (Judith Kerr)
  9. The Lion King (Disney)
  10. Pirate Adventure (Disney)
  11. A perfect day (Disney)
  12. Ratatouille : Rat-a-too-ee –( Disney)

These books are read almost every day and Tinker bell and Tiger story is read ‘at least’ three times a day. Other books which are discussed and pondered over every day are book of Nursery Rhymes, opposites, first words and picture Dictionary.

Initially it was difficult to make her understand ‘not to tear’ pages, now it seems a lot easier because she knows if they are torn, we can’t read it and pictures get distorted too. Now if she sees any of us picking a book to read to ourselves, she will run and gather few of her books and bring them over. She politely requests for the book which we are holding, she keeps it back on the table and replaces it with her book. The best part right now is, books are preferred to any TV show, unless otherwise it’s a movie from the book she is read to.

Personally, it’s a great stress and guilt buster to us, because we know we spent some ‘quality’ time with our daughter. Mostly, we buy books online and never leave an opportunity during travel; anything good we can get hold of finds a place in her library.

Travelling with infants, toddlers, kids

Travelling with an infant is easier than travelling with an active toddler :). Well, we travelled with Devyani to more than 10 locations in the first two years. One mode of transportation which we did not try conciously is water transport.

What you need to carry during travel depends on how old/small your child is, mode of transport and the place you are visiting. Is it a holiday destination, friend’s place or relatives, you need to make changes accordingly. Keep in mind the temperature of the destination while packing.

Stepping Out? Check for the following

  1. One set of dress including one undergarment.  I carry comfy full sleeves, full length casuals
which can be put on if she wants to sleep on the way after supper.
  2. Diaper (if not out of diaper)
  3. Wet wipes
  4. Hand Sanitizer
  5. Water

Going out for couple of hours? Add on following

  1. Carry something to munch on

Going out for few days? Add on few more things in addition to more clothes and diapers

  1. Basic medicines (I carry paracetamol, nasal drops, rash free, band aid and Dettol most of the time. Used to keep anti colic and a gum pain reliever too when she was small)
  2. Bathing and skin care items, best you carry your own things; it does not occupy too much space.
  3. Diaper changing sheet and Quick drying sheets (these are very very helpful – I bought a full length sheet and cut it into
three, one half and two one by fourth’s)

If your stay is more than two weeks remember to stock these too

  1. Mosquito net (yes! Its required if you don’t want to encounter insect bites at a different place, and this too doesn’t cover too much space
  2. Medical Records/File

If you are travelling by bus, stock more snacks, keep spare plastic bags to throw waste,  if by train, then add more tissues; you would want to do some cleaning of windows and seats J and if it’s by air, ensure following

  1. Letter of no objection by spouse, sounds funny, but do keep it
  2. Age proof document of child
  3. Take your baby gear, whatever you are using, a carrier, pram, stroller; getting them through security check will be just
another six minutes, three minutes to fold it and three to open it. It’s extremely useful, gives you freedom and frees your hands.

As and when you get seated look for emergency exits and know what to do. During my first air travel with Devyani I was worried about where will the ‘extra’ oxygen mask fall from, cause there were three adult passengers in the same row. So I asked the lady which one is mine, which one is, my child’s and which one belongs to the other two passengers. I did get a funny look, but came to know that in most aircrafts there are four oxygen marks in a row of three seats. When aircrafts have oxygen masks same as the number of seats in a row, they will leave the next seat vacant for parent/s who are travelling with a child who is not allocated a seat.

Caution: Overheating when your child is very small, let the concerned know there is a baby on board and maintain temperature, even if it needs a little raising of voice.

Allergy, Cold, Cough, Running Nose and Sneezes

Finally!!! We think we found peace!! from 18 time a year,  our  visit to the Paed is now  reduced to two for allergy related Upper Respiratory Infections.

As they grow, immunity improves, so that's definitely a factor. But there are more to it, we decided to change our pillows every six months. So from Costly fluffy pillows, we  switched to cheap and bacteria resistant ones!

Secondly we started a doze of  Haldi (Turmeric) everyday, half a teaspoon before going to sleep. Thankfully she eats it out spoon and drinks water along with it. In this you need to be cautious /alert about the powder getting swallowed immediately to avoid it getting inhaled.

We found out that her allergy starts at the onset of winters, so beginning September we switched to seasonal vegetables and Fruits. So there is a constant supply of carrots and Orange.

Its working well now, you can try too. Hope it helps!
